I have been living in Key West, Florida for the past 14 years. Originally I am from Cleveland, Ohio. I am a painter and I wanted to get away from the hustle and bustle of city life and also have some nice scenery to paint. Therefore Key West was the ideal place for me to move my life to. So I was living my nice, quiet existence and imagine my shocking surprise to find out that the Dolphin Mall in Miami would make me want to return to that urban hustle and bustle. I had to go to Miami to see one of my fellow painters gallery showings on Lincoln Road in South Beach. In my 14 years of living in Key West I've only had to leave there a couple of times because hurricanes were coming and I had to evacuate to the hurricane shelters outside of Miami. Anytime I evacuated though the minute the evacuation was lifted I returned very promptly. So venturing up to Miami for my for my associates showing was a cultural and physical shock to my system.
The bright lights, the noise, and the smell were something that my senses were not used to. My friend needed some painting supplies so he chose the Dolphin Mall in Doral which was just a 15 minute car drive from the beach. When we got to the mall I saw that it was an architectural marvel. It was massive and the design was very sharp and clean. When we entered the mall there was more sensory overload on my part.
The first thing we did was grab a bite to eat cause we were both very hungry. We ate at a restaurant called PF Changs which serves Asian fare. This was some of the best Asian food I have ever had in my life. We don't really have any good Chinese restaurants in Key West. My friend told me that this place is very popular and it is a restaurant chain. I have to say that this is a lot better than the franchise food that I have had in the past. After we ate lunch my friend and I decided to split up, that way I could go and do some exploring on my own. It's hard for me to convey what a magnificent experience I was having at the Dolphin Mall. It was just so nice to see so many different colors and so many different types of people and hear so many different types of sounds. There were huge bookstores, there were huge electronic stores, there were all types of things to see and look at.
It started to occur to me that I had been in a bit of a rut with my painting in Key West. There were just so many things to draw from in this one location at the mall let alone the rest of Miami that it got me to start thinking about new material that I could put on my canvus. When I rejoined my friend I told him what I was thinking and he agreed with me wholeheartedly. He is from California and he said that there's just not enough to draw from in Key West. Do not get me wrong I will always love Key West and I visit there frequently but I am very grateful to the Dolphin Mall for waking up my senses again. It just goes to show that their are two sides to every coin.
